Thinking more on your first point: I can also, easily, see Thom being the kind of person who really, really enjoys just hanging around and cynically watching the antics people get up to. (Real people: better than soap operas.) I think what it boils down to is that I really don't think he likes people, and I also think places full of bright, shiny, polished, reflective, flickering things might prove ... distracting, given what I tend to assume about his Gift.
I also just realized that given the nature of my AUs I am generally writing about Thom as a kid/teen, and Thom the adult probably has coping mechanisms (and a helluva dose of cynicism) that his younger self doesn't.
(...I should, randomly, edit the list to add the really random bit of head-canon I have for Thom: that he's a really sappy and affectionate drunk.)
