Now that I think on it more, I think Thom is a bit of a chameleon. Alanna wants to stand out and be noticed; canonically, Thom keeps his head down and plays dumb (which has to be grating) for years. I'm not sure he's very good at playing to people's expectations, but I think it's fairly supportable that he does, and I sort of wonder now if the way he acts at court is part of that.
I was just looking over some of my stories, and of all the characters, Thom seems to be the one most impacted by where he is and what people are expecting of him. I do think it's telling that in canon his first instinct is to keep his head down and do whatever it takes to throw off suspicion.
I sort of wonder, now, what it was like for him when he finally did come to court. I wonder what people's expectations were, given that they knew Alanna and she'd presumably told a few stories about her twin. I sort of wonder how much of what people saw of him was really him, and how much was him playing to those expectations.
Also, I knew I forgot something in my post. Need to edit. Gah.
